Scope of work: This project forms part of the electricity interconnection between Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, designed to exchange 3,000 MW and take advantage of the differences in peak electricity demand between the two countries. It also represents the first step toward electricity interconnection between Egypt and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

Summary on project: On October 5, 2021, the consortium consisting of CEEC-GC3-XD signed the project contract with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC),with Energy China acting as the main contractor under this agreement.
The contract covers engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of a 500 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line over a distance of 330 km, including crossing the Suez Canal with two towers, each 210 m high, spanning a total distance of 2 km. Currently, the project is progressing toward completing the first phase, which will transmit 1.5 GW by June 2025.
